  • Organic + Fair is Theme of the Year
  • BioFach and Vivaness defy the crisis with 2,534 exhibitors
The entire organic sector meets at BioFach and Vivaness from 17–20 February. The exhibition duo again promises trade visitors a variety of healthy and enjoyable products, innovations and highlights from the 2,534 exhibitors from 84 countries. Two-thirds of the exhibitors come from abroad. Besides Germany with 823 manufacturers, the following countries are traditionally strongly represented: Italy (384), Spain (174), France (169), Austria (103) and the Netherlands (83). A growing number of people look for added value in organic products. With Organic + Fair as Theme of the Year, the exhibitions focus on examples of fair organic production and trade.

Organic products offer enjoyment and well-being, but they can do even more: organic agriculture is good for the environment and climate and thus for succeeding generations. Plus the corporate philosophy of organic manufacturers is also orientated towards social aspects like fairness.

Theme of the Year: Organic + Fair focuses on organic added value
According to the Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO) of Bonn in Germany, sales of fair trade products in the retail trade amounted to 2.9 billion US dollars in 2008. Two-thirds of all fair trade products meanwhile come from organic farming. Fair production and trading conditions are becoming increasingly important for customers. So BioFach and Vivaness 2010 focus attention on fair trade with organic products.

In the special area in hall 5, visitors can discover and see 96 product presentations by 52 exhibitors from 14 countries that reflect all the facets of fair trade. 14 lectures at the associated Fair & Ethical Trade Forum provide extensive information for visitors thirsting for knowledge. The topics include: “Organic is good – Organic & fair is BETTER (VALUE)”, “One fair idea, competing standards – Is harmonization possible?”, and “From fair trade to ethical cooperation: Is the traditional interpretation of fair trade still up to date?”

Some 5 % of the wine exhibitors at BioFach present fair trade organic wines. 557,000 litres of wine with a fair trade label were sold worldwide in 2008, 72 % more than the year before. The organic share was 63 %.

Worldwide sales of organic products topped 50 billion US dollars in 2008, which means the market has doubled since 2003. Initial estimates by Organic Monitor of Great Britain indicate that the international market should continue to grow, although at a lower level. The whole market and the sector can look forward to higher growth rates in 2010, according to Managing Director Amarjit Sahota.
