Organic Tours at BioFach 2012

Tanja Dworschak runs a herb market garden near Nuremberg
In collaboration with BioFach, from 15-18.02.2012 Bio-Markt.Info is offering three different tours to specialist wholefood retailers, shops selling natural textiles, and a visit to an organic farm with further processing facilities. Following the visits to the specialist trade, there will be a guided tour of some places of interest in the historic part of Nuremberg. The first two tours will last two and a half to three hours and will include an organic snack. The interesting coach trip to organic farms in the Nuremberg area will take about five hours.

The tours will be conducted in English, since they are aimed first and foremost at the international visitors to BioFach and in previous years they proved to be very popular. However, if at least ten people request a different language, we can provide an interpreter, for example, in French, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Russian, Czech, Japanese, Chinese and in many other languages. A fee will be charged for this service.

1. Specialist Wholefood Retail in Nuremberg

Naturkostladen Lotos was founded in the 1980s and is one of the pioneers in the organic market in Nuremberg. The Lotos company now has two specialist wholefood shops, each with around 100 m². An important activity at both shops is serving freshly prepared, organic midday meals and providing catering for events. At BioFach, the company operates, for example, a wholefood café that brings in a lot of people. Lotos is representative of about 2,000 wholefood shops in Germany with retail space between 50 and 150 m².

The organic supermarket Basic was opened in Nuremberg in 2002. It has 900 m² and sells an extensive product range of over 8,000 articles. It has a bistro where you can buy hot and cold drinks and snacks. Basic operates 24 organic supermarkets (800 – 1,100 m²) in Germany and two in Austria (Vienna and Salzburg). It is anticipating a turnover of approximately 100 million euros for 2011.

Last but not least, at the end of this tour, we will take you to a small but very special brewery which has obtained an „Organic Certificate” number 001. This is where you will not only learn a lot about beer but, of course, will be able to sample it!

The Gemüsekiste Fischer (vegetable box) run by Andreas Fischer, specialises in the production, storage and direct marketing of organic vegetables. The farm converted to organic in 1998 and has been a member of the Bioland Association since 2001. Since 1999, the company has been operating a subscription system, with customers being supplied with a weekly box of vegetables. The subscription products are divided into the categories of fruit and vegetables, bread, eggs, cheese and wine. Consumers can also buy directly from this Bioland farm’s own shop. In addition, visitors can inspect the farm’s photovoltaic installation (solar panels) and a wood chip heating system. In 2010, Andreas Fischer’s farm has become a state-registered training establishment.

Georg Burger’s dairy farm specialises in cheese production. However, he also produces eggs, cereals, potatoes and various dairy products, all of which are sold in the farm shop.

Participants of the bus tour will be offered a simple lunch in Nuremberg, consisting of a vegetable stew.

At the herb market garden KräuterGut Dworschak-Fleischmann, the visitor can learn a great deal about growing and marketing a wide range of potted herbs. Tanja Dworschak and her 15 employees grow 240 different herbs – a huge number. Every year, about 3.5 million pots of herbs are sold to the wholefood trade and conventional supermarkets. In 2006, Mrs Dworschak – the fourth generation of her family to operate the farm – was awarded the accolade “Business Woman of the Year” by the Bavarian State Government for her innovative business.
