WE PRODUCE QUALITY THROUGH A PRODUCTION CHAIN FROM OUR MEMBER FARMERS TO THE TABLE
WE PRODUCE OUR PASTA IN A LOW ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT FACTORY
The farm is located in Corteregona di Calvatone in province of Cremona, in the south-east of the Po valley, far from noisy factories and the bustle of motorways. It covers about 40 hectares within the bounds of the Oglio Sud Natural Park bordering the WWf Oasis “Le Bine” and a site of archeological and historical importance. The areas that are part of the natural parks, oasis and archaeological excavation sites are naturally subject to strict regulations to ensure the safeguard of the environment and nature. This is an ideal setting for a farm specialized in biological production methods to achieve only the highest quality standards for its produce.
It was founded in 1978, taking inspiration by IVO TOTTI‘s teachings, "forerunner" and "pioneer" of the organic farming practice in Italy, Since the beginning we developed our agronomic abilities and knowledge with the aim of promoting the methods and the techniques of organic farming. Our continuous research activity often makes these methods the object of great interest and debate as well as a reference point for both national and international field, favouring the spreading of organic farming method.
The horticultural products
Iris vegetables and cereals are grown only in the lands of the cooperative located in Calvatone. Among our cultivations of vegetables there are: Salad (Lettuce, Gentile, Canasta), chicory, (Chioggia, Treviso type, Indivie), courgettes, Delica pumpkins, San Marzano tomatoes and so on.
Breeding in the wild
We raise pigs according to the organic method, free in the country. It is a small farm. In this way we recover the rejects of organic pasta of the pasta factory. We produce salami and cotechini.
For the production and marketing of IRIS brand processed products - pasta, flours, biscuits, crackers, processed tomato - In 1999 IRIS created its own trading company named A.S.T.R.A. BIO.
Company’s primary purpose consists of controlling the whole production process of each single item in order to guarantee to the consumer not only the total traceability but mainly the high quality of IRIS products so that they can convey the purity and freshness of our raw materials.
The new “Pastificio” Iris
In Casteldidone, in province of Cremona, 9 km far from the seat of the Cooperative Iris there is the “Pastificio” Iris; a unique building with environmentally-friendly features. It covers an area of about 15,000 hectares and has been built according to bio-construction methods using mostly recyclable materials. The cement has been minimised; it has been used only for the walls and it is a cement of certified origins. The other building materials are wood, steel, glass and stone wool. The large part of the plant is powered by renewable energy, produced mainly by photovoltaic panels on the roof together with the rooftop gardens that contribute to the insulation and maintaining temperatures in the plant. This “Pastificio” allows Iris to extend the pasta production and therefore the supply chain leading to an extension of the net of the farmers who produce according to organic methods.
To finance the building of the new “Pastificio”, the Cooperative Iris has obtained the economic support from those who believe in its values; its consumers. The new pasta factory has been also financed by investors who share with Iris a belief in common economic growth, the organic world and environmental protection.
