What is Flores Farm?
Our story began in 2005 with a trip to the Indonesian island of Flores. A friend of ours, Johannes Schwegler, and a TV team from Westdeutscher Rundfunk were making a documentary about a cashew-project on Flores island. This cashew project was founded in 2004 by Swisscontact.
Cashew trees grown by 540 families, organized in 4 cooperatives, were certified by European and American (USDA) organic standards. Martin Steckdaub, who had previously worked for many years for NGOs, was very interested in the project and convinced Jochen Wolf, a former manager of a heating and sanitation distributor to come along for the filming.
We were deeply impressed by this project, run by the principles of sustainability and granting a perspective to the people in one of the poorest regions of Indonesia. It shocked us to learn that the whole project was doomed to fail.
The farmers had no buyers for their organic nuts and would have been forced to sell for low, dictated prices on the conventional market. We decided to buy 60 tons of raw nuts and take its processing into our own hands – Flores Farm (GmbH) was born. But it wasn’t only the fact that the nuts were grown organically and that the farmers benefited convinced us, it was also the quality of the cashew nuts and their unique way of processing...
The Philosophy of Flores Farm
Organic farming protects the environment from destructive interference. It encourages small agricultural businesses and preserves century old knowledge and craftsmanship. Fair trade secures financial independence for our partners, helps preserve regional structures and develop new ones. Strong self supporting units are the goal, in order to preserve and widen the skills of craftsmanship for further development. We only trade and process food products of the highest quality, and we take our time searching for the best rawmaterials. If we don't find the quality we expect, we initiate projects together with NGOs.
As soon as the crops are ready for harvesting they are processed in the most gentle way. Top priority is given to preserving all nutrients, vitamins and full flavor.
What keeps us going is the the production and trade of natural foods of the highest possible quality - combined with granting a bit of independence for emerging countries. Our goal is the material and ideal gain of all involved in the project, the joy of our customers in learning about our production methods and consuming our products.
Expertise in fair traded organic premium nuts is the foremost goal of our young company.
