A chemistry student with an organic vision
The MorgenLand company started off small. Orhan Yilmaz, who was 18 at the time, came from Turkey to Germany in 1978 to study chemistry in Bremen – and at this time was already interested in food products which are produced without using chemical methods. Coupled with his enthusiasm for topics such as natural medicine and homoeopathy, one year later he swapped the lecture hall for “Sonnenblume”, one of the first organic shops in Bremen. “Lots of people laughed at me because even back then, I was already sure that the demand for organic products would grow in future”, the entrepreneur Orhan Yilmaz reminisces.
Sustainable growth into an organic company
Orhan Yilmaz turned out to be right. What started as a small organic shop for tea, spices and dried fruit in 1979 in Bremen has developed over the years into a friendly family company which today supplies the organic industry with over 120 different MorgenLand items – all at organic quality, of course. The organic specialist in fruit, nuts, coconut products, legumes, Oil Seeds and Grains currently employs 50 members of staff at its site in Oyten. The original objective of owner Orhan Yilmaz “From the field to the shop shelf – everything from one source!” is still the company’s mission statement today. Thus the company’s own cultivation projects ensure the flow of goods and the constant improvement of quality, and also promote organic farming worldwide.
An international farming family
Nowadays, not only the owner’s Turkish family cultivates organic quality apricots and figs for the brand, but also an additional 400 farming partners in Turkey, 263 farmers in Sri Lanka and agricultural organic facilities in Burkina Faso, China, Algeria and South Africa. Further cultivation projects will guarantee secure raw materials sources in future. “We want openness throughout the whole process, from cultivation to the finished product. Personal contact with the people who grow the products is just as important to us as the processing of freshly harvested goods and a comprehensive quality control procedure”, says company founder Orhan Yilmaz.
Why is MorgenLand investing in its own cultivation projects?
MorgenLand is one of the pioneers in the organic movement and specialises in organic fruits, organic nuts and organic coconut products. From the very start, owner Orhan Yilmaz knew that farming is the basis for high quality but also readily available organic products. The procurement of raw materials has become increasingly important due to increasing demand. In addition to this, the quality requirements for organic products have also increased. Because the large majority of these raw materials originates from outside Europe, a personal relationship with the organic farmers serves as a guarantee of good quality and sustainable supply, and this is still the case today. MorgenLand’s cultivation projects are therefore key to extending the amount of organic cultivatable land and ensuring the sustainable procurement of raw materials for the company. Due to our close contact with growers and processors we can also influence sustainable and social issues on site. MorgenLand’s motto is: “From the field to the shop shelf – everything from one source!”
