The Frosch Brand

Back in 1986 the newly created Frosch brand ventured into new territory as an eco pioneer by bringing environmentally friendly products to the market. The timing of the launch coincided with growing environmental awareness in Germany. The public, overwhelmed by recent reports of environmental disasters, responded with enthusiasm and great interest and eagerly accepted the products in ecological packaging.

30 years ago the Frosch products were the first phosphate-free cleaners on the market. Frosch has regularly extended its lead in know-how related to ecological and environmentally compatible cleaning performance. The environment and sustainability are considered along the entire value chain and in every phase of the production of Frosch products (Mainz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany). Products are manufactured with high resource efficiency (raw materials for products, electricity and water use). As proof, the company with the green frog has earned environmental validation (EMAS III).

Which product properties led to the C2C Award?

The Frosch Citrus Shower & Bath Cleaner is a highly effective cleaning product that meets the highest environmental standards along the entire value chain. The active ingredients and materials used were selected with long-term preservation of natural resources and their incorporation in biological and technological nutrient cycles in mind.

The ingredients are selected to preclude toxic effects during use or in other phases such as manufacture, recycling and reuse. The product formulas that use plant-based surfactants (wash-active substances) contain no chemicals such as phosphate, borate, formaldehyde and organic halogen compounds.

Food coloring is the only dye used and the fragrances added in low concentrations comply with the Cosmetics Directive.

Cradle to Cradle® is based on designing products and packaging for integration in biological or technological nutrient cycles. The challenge is in planning the product’s progress through a closed material cycle, which means that product materials should be suitable for a safe and complete return to the biosphere or for recovery and good quality reuse. Evidence shows that production with up to 100% non-polluting, renewable energy follows, with carbon dioxide-neutral energy completely replacing energy from fossil fuels. Water quality and supplies are protected and improved. Certified companies are committed to caring for the environment, promoting social equity and preserving biodiversity.

Since the first "Cradle to Cradle CertifiedCM Gold" designation in 2014, the following Frosch brand products also have been certified: Frosch bio spirit glass cleaner and Frosch Lavender Hygiene Cleaner.

Cradle to Cradle® is a registered trademark of McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry LLC

Recycling first!

Both the formulas and innovative packaging materials used by the Frosch brand are environmentally friendly. It's only natural that the packaging of all Frosch products is 100% recyclable. But Frosch goes even further and uses a recyclate share (old plastic) of up to 100% in its PET bottles. The Frosch Recyclate Initiative is meant to promote PET recycling so that the huge amount of this valuable raw material, which goes into the Yellow Bag as waste, can be re-used for an equivalent application.

Unfortunately, a large share of the used plastic containers is not appropriately re-used. Very often the old plastic from the Yellow Bag collection system ends up as auxiliary fuel in municipal incinerators. In the process, the valuable and finite resource of crude oil is wasted and the atmosphere is polluted by CO2.

But it does not have to be that way because sophisticated technical processes have been developed to obtain high-quality recyclates from used PET bottles. In a pilot project Werner & Mertz proved that it is possible to put Frosch brand cleaning and care products into PET bottles made from up to 100% recyclates, of which 20% come from the Yellow Bag. The Recyclate Initiative has even bigger plans. In the near future the PET bottles will be produced with a higher share of recyclates from the Yellow Bag.

The result of this PET re-use in a nutshell: an eco effective cycle with true upcycling and resource preservation, lower energy consumption and reduced emissions.

Surfactants based on European plants

Conventional cleaning products often contain petroleum-based surfactants. Frosch, however, puts its trust in surfactants derived from renewable plant sources such as coconut or palm kernel oil. Frosch uses 100% surfactants with RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) certificates, but wants to do more. In an ambitious research project, Werner & Mertz is working out ways to do without tropical cultivation in the long-term and use instead surfactants based on plants native to Europe.

The Frosch brand is turning to varied native oils from rapeseed, linseed and olives. Emphasis is placed on using only oil or oil quality suitable for industrial purposes in order to avoid any competition with oils for nutritional purposes.

Furthermore, the use of different domestic oil-producing plants encourages variety and sustainability in otherwise unbalanced crop rotation practices and simultaneously promotes biodiversity. Surfactants from European cultivation are already used in some Frosch cleaners, such as Frosch scouring cream, which contains 100% surfactants from native plant sources.

Current Awards:

Most Trusted Brand

Over the years the Frosch brand has consistently earned the trust of consumers. In 2015 Frosch received the Most Trusted Brand award in the category "Cleaning Agents" in Germany for the 14th year in a row. The award is given by the Reader's Digest, which conducts the annual consumer survey. Today it is impossible to imagine store shelves without the Frosch brand. The products have a fixed place in nearly all areas of household cleaning and care.

ECR Award

The ECR Award for Efficient Consumer Response is granted by GS1 Germany. The award honors outstanding collaborative work across the value chain that puts customer orientation in the focus. The renowned prize is presented in Nuremberg annualey at a festive event with about 400 guests from top management of leading industrial and commercial companies.

German Packaging Award

The international cross-industry and materials competition for the German Packaging Award is held every year with the goal of recognizing futuristic solutions and developments in packaging. Since 1963 an independent jury has made annual awards in five categories. Prize winners qualify for participation in the "World Start" competition put on by the World Packaging Organisation. The German Packaging Institute (DVI) is the organizer of the German Packaging Award. Many representatives of business and politics attended the ceremony for the award, which is under the patronage of the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Sigmar Gabriel. Of the 230 submissions from 10 countries, 61 were nominated and 29 innovations were honored.

Federal Ecodesign

Since 2012 the Federal Environment Ministry and the Federal Environment Agency have promoted the annual Federal Ecodesign Award to make the public aware of ecological design's contribution to environmental protection and to encourage innovation in this area. The Federal Ecodesign Award puts environmental assessment and design evaluation on equal footing and showcases innovative products, services and ideas of outstanding ecological and design quality. In 2014 the prizes in several different categories were awarded to 13 projects chosen from more than 200 submissions. Federal Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks and Federal Environment Agency President Maria Krautzberger handed out the awards and personally congratulated the winners.

The International Design Center Berlin, supported by an advisory board, has been commissioned to oversee the development and implementation of the competition.
