Poma Culta is a non-profit organisation founded 2004 with the purpose to support research in biodynamic fruit production. At present breeding for new apple varieties with good suitability for organic agriculture is the most important task. The practical breeding process mainly takes place on a testing ground in the biodynamic environment of the farm Biohof Rigi in Hessigkofen, Switzerland. Annually various crossings are executed and subsequently several thousend seedlings are selected on traits for robustness and quality. At present all breeding work is amounting 150 percent by position.
Poma Culta has a close cooperation with the Research Institut for Organic Agriculture FiBL, Frick, Switzerland. In order to test the candidate varieties as to their suitability for organic or biodynamic cultivation, practical field trials are being carried out in cooperation with farms in different apple-growing regions of Europe. Furthermore six candidate varieties are in the official variety assessement.
