INSECT RESPECT® is the first quality mark worldwide for control-neutral insect repellents. The principle: 1. Identification of the ecological intervention through biocidal products, based on a scientific model. 2. Compensation in urban areas by the creation of insect friendly biotops that strengthen the local biodiversity. 3. Guarantee of the compensation in advance of the labeled products sale.
Thus, products with the INSECT RESPECT® quality mark guarantee a compensation of th einsect loss that derives from their application. The label is open for the use of biocide producers as well as white label products of retailers. The first compensation areas have been created as green flat roofs Bielefeld (D) and Gais (CH).
Companies today are required more than ever to compensate for the negative consequences of their actions. We humans can in fact not avoid controlling insects in certain areas of our daily life, mostly for reasons of hygiene, for example in order to prevent the transmission of diseases. However, we may not forget hereby that insects are also beneficial organisms, for example as an essential link in the food chain, as natural helpers with the pollination or also with the degradation of organic substances.
The gain in life quality, which is produced from the insect control, is thus always compared with a loss for our ecological systems. The biological model of INSECT RESPECT® facilitates a compensation for this loss. The label is exclusively awarded to products, the manufacturers of which create a compensation which is appropriate for the species of the controlled insects. The compensation is guaranteed not only from the sale of the products, but is ensured from the start with their production already. The consumers thereby are granted full warranty that control and safekeeping are in balance.
Compensation is accomplished with the installation of insect-friendly extensive greened roofs in residential or industrial areas. This involves the creation of new greened roofs or the sanitization of existing ones. In order to calculate the required compensation area, with the help of ARNAL - Büro für Natur und Landschaft AG an ecological model was created for the control-neutral insect protection. The developed method - the first of this kind worldwide - is based on the weight of the insects (living biomass).
The compensation areas also contribute to social sustainability: They are created in urban areas, where they add to the local life quality. Their formation and caring is organised, whenever possible, in cooperation with social institutions (e.g. social housing, permanently unemployed person).
INSECT RESPECT® raises awareness for the value of insects in the public. The benefits of insects, both for nature and mankind, are just as varied as they are priceless. The INSECT RESPECT® awareness programme highlights 10 good reasons for respecting the insects:
1. Resilience: Insects make nature more ruggedised.
2. Pollination: Insects keep the plant kingdom alive.
3. Ecosystem: Insects are an important part of the food chain.
4. Feed and food: Insects save the world's nourishment.
5. Hygiene: Insects get rid of our «waste».
6. Soil: Insects make the earth fertile.
7. Clothes: Insects are essential for textile production.
8. Industry: Insects produce chemicals.
9. Medicine: Insects can heal and pollinate medicinal plants.
10. Research: Insects are scientifically very valuable.
The respect of insects is question of ethics. The reply of INSECT RESPECT®: Whenever we cannot avoid combatting insects, we must equilibrate this intrusion in the ecological system by providing compensating areas.
The concept of INSECT RESPECT® has been awarded several times, e.g. with the Swiss Ethics Award, Top 3 of the Kyocera Environmental Prize in the category "biodiversity, nature conservation and water pollution control" and as Top 10 in the GreenTec Awards 2016, category "lifestyle".
