Irupana Andean Organic Food S.A (Irupana) is a Bolivian small business with a strong sense of social responsibility, which manufactures and sells natural and organic food produced by small farmers in indigenous communities from the highlands, valleys and tropical areas around the Andean Range.
The Company was founded by Dr. Javier Hurtado and Martha Cordero de Hurtado, to recover the agro-ecological potential and the alimentary culture of Bolivia’s rural areas, through the industrialization of native crops such as quinoa and amaranth. Irupana buys and process raw materials from 1700 low-income farmers, who otherwise would have few markets for their goods. In addition to selling in the local market, the Company exports to USA, Germany, Israel, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil and Peru.
The firm also leads a suppliers’ development program that supports small farmers on implementing organic farming practices and improving productivity, applying fair trade principles.
The Company’s social-business model consist on supporting small farmers at indigenous communities in order to implement better organic production practices; ensuring them a secure market for their products through buying and manufacturing organic and natural food products; for selling value added food goods in national and international markets. This model allows the insertion of small low income farmers from the Andes and surrounding areas into global markets, while respecting the ancient culture of indigenous small farmers, as well as providing high-protein, gluten free cereals to the organic and natural markets.
