It is a fairly common species and grows in hardwoods and coniferous forests, especially beech, birch, spruce, pine; in the hills and mountains. We can find it throughout the summer and fall.
The fruiting body is a large imposing mushroom, the cap of which may reach 25 cm in diameter and 1 kg in weight.
Characteristics: surface smooth to wrinkled, dry to sub-viscid in wet weather, colour varying form yellow-brown, buff-brown to reddish-brown; unchanging thick white flesh; mild odour and taste.
