The Julius-Kuehn-Institute is both, a higher Federal authority and the Federal research institution for Cultivated Plants. We are predestined by this double role to address topics in the fields where politics, research and practical applications intersect. We advise the German government in the light of applied basic science in combination with practical experience or research findings. In this way we arrive at innovative, sustainable solutions for tomorrow’s crop producers also in the field of Eco-farming.

It is our task to supply data based on sound science that will help other authorities and those with political responsibility to make their decisions and, moreover, to make such data available to all. Our researchers work on long-term research projects to help breed improved crop plants or studying the cycles of material in agricultural eco-systems, but they are always ready to react ad hoc to new problems and social issues that suddenly become relevant. We succeed in mastering a balance between long-term studies (for example diagnostics, long-term field-trials) and more immediate solutions to problems (for example, as posed by the spotted wing fruit fly). We are a major centre of agricultural research affiliated to the German Ministry of Food and Agriculture and function as the interface between the EU and Germany, Federal and state governments and between academia and practice.

Plants cultivated in agriculture, horticulture, fruit and vine growing, in urban greenery and forestry, fulfil many functions and serve a variety of purposes - for example to produce food, provide an environmental service, supply energy or offer space for recreation and leisure experiences. Only a limited supply of these valuable spaces is available and they must therefore satisfy numerous demands. In the light of the challenges facing the nations of the world, the sustainable cultivation of agricultural and forest land with healthy crop plants is the order of the day. The aims of the JKI’s work and research lie in following sectors:

Soil sciences
Plant nutrition and cultivation
Plant genetics, plant breeding research and breeding new strains
Bee protection, Biodiversity
Plant protection and Plant health
