Naturland Seafood - wild or farmed?
Finfish, Shellfish, and algae are not only healthy and tasty elements of modern cuisine, but also indispensable base for nutrition of the growing world population. Although, at the end of the 20th century, aquaculture - the husbandry of aquatic animals and plants - became the food sector with highest annual growth rates, the major part of all fish and seafood is still wild caught from the oceans, the lakes, and the rivers. However, more than a third, however, originates from aquaculture - the systematic cultivation and reproduction in ponds, net pens, mussel lines, enclosures etc.
Seafood in Naturland Quality
Since their establishment in the mid-1990s, the Naturland organic standards for aquaculture have ranked among the most important in the industry. Key issues for Naturland is always the sustainable exploitation of resources in environmental, social and economic terms. Some 15 species are certified to these standards, ranging from German freshwater fish such as trout, carp and salmon, Mediterranean species such as gilthead sea bream and sea bass, tropical freshwater fish (pangasius, tilapia), to prawns, mussels and even various types of algae. There are now 17 countries where fish farming is practised in systems with semi-natural environments appropriate to the respective species.
Preservation of marine resources
In addition to the requirements for the keeping of fish in particular the source of the feed is important: under Naturland, fish meal and fish oil used in the feed are the waste produced when food fish are processed and are not, as normal elsewhere, a product of industrial fishing specifically for feed production. Only organic aquaculture makes a real contribution to the preservation of our marine resources.
Sustainable catch – organic processing
Since 2009 Naturland is certifying sustainable fisheries. The "Naturland Wild Fish" program includes, for example Nile perch from Lake Victoria, Baltic herring and native freshwater fish from the large reserve Schaalsee.
The Naturland Wildfish logo stands not only for sustainable fishing in harmony with nature. In contrast to other fishing certification, the processing of the products is also strictly organic. For example, the use of phosphates is prohibited. Ingredients such as oil and spices must be organic.
