Near the southeastern coastline of the Danish Island Funen lies ”Fredelighed” (Danish for Peacefulness). Gitte and Jes Mosgaard have gently transformed the old farm in to an artisan distillery. We have a mission of taking the Scottish traditions a bit further by adding Danish taste, design and traditions for high quality organic food into a new interpretation of traditional products.
We have built the distillery in the countryside near the coastline where nature helps us maturing our whisky with help from the unspoiled nature. The water beneath us has an attractive and fascinating influence to both gin and whisky being fresh and loaded with minerals from our rich soils. The island of Funen is known as the fruit garden of Denmark – this is the taste of Mosgaard products.
Organic grown wheat and barley is clean and free of pesticides and other chemicals used in conventional cereal production. Our basic raw materials are also products with low impact on the environment compared to conventional cereals and the taste is unspoiled and completely the way we want it to be. The Barley is grown in a Danish national park on the west coast of Denmark – our whisky is based an old Danish Barley type which is malted on the farm to our specifications to ensure the correct fruitiness and sweet malty caramel taste. The search for optimal taste through the best raw materials and methods have earned us the title of Best Danish Distillery in 2018
Our distillery is specially designed by Mosgaard and hand built by extremely skilled craftsmen in Portugal. Thousands of hammer strokes have formed the raw copper plates to the shape we have designed to achieve the specific taste profile that characterizes our products. Slow distillation purifies the alcohol and all aspects of the production process adds to the character of our taste – clean as our nature. The kettles are designed to enhance fruit flavors, and create a sweet and pure new spirit.
Mosgaard Single Malts
The selection of Whisky comes in two basic versions. Either un-peated fruity well balanced single malt whisky with notes of fruit, almond, vanilla, caramel, burned figs, plums and most important a clean and crisp taste of malt. Or a peated version where the barley malt has been dried over peat smoke that gives a delicate taste of smoke and charming sweetness to a massive full body with notes of vanilla sweetness from Bourbon casks, heather and tar.
Mosgaard whisky is available as our price winning Young Malt and from 2019 as Whisky. Our first release of Young Malt entered IWSC whisky category in 2017 and the Jury were so excited by it that already now a little over a year after the production start it received a Bronze award – judged as a whisky – and in 2018 both unpeated malts received Silver awards, the highest award nominated to any Danish Whisky – still only a Young Malt.
Our gins are produced in pot stills as our whisky to preserve sweetness from the base alcohol produced from organic wheat. This results in a unique recognizable Mosgaard taste with a full and rich sweet taste. Our philosophy in taste development is finding the balance of taste over the tongue. With a specific combination of botanicals we ensures the juniper sensation is balanced and the taste organs are stimulated equally over the tongue giving a soft and pleasant mouth feeling.
Our gin kettles are our own special hybrid design – the best from pot stills meet vapor infusion – all gins are produced with fresh organic zest of citrus fruits, challenging in production but only the best is good enough for our gins as the citrus package is essential for freshness and build-up of an impressive aftertaste. Already in 2016 Mosgaard was honored for our handcrafted Dry Gin, which were awarded Bronze by the IWSC, upgraded to a silver award in 2017 and in 2018 Dry Gin and our new gins Filippa, Red Love and GinGin have received numerous awards and good reviews.
