In the 1920s, Karl and Margret Voelkel settled as pioneers in the spirit of migratory birds on the Höhbeck, a sparsely populated track of land on the Elbe River in Lower Saxony, Germany. They initially planted apple, pear and cherry trees as well as strawberries, currants and gooseberry bushes in their orchard and farmed them according to an anthroposophical point of view. Thus the idea of Demeter as a cornerstone for the family business was established over eighty years ago. The conviction to this holistic method of operation runs through the entire history of Voelkel up to the present day as a central idea. After Karl and Margret Voelkel had travelled for several years with a mobile juice press – the "Mostmax" – from village to village and turned the fruit of the local residents into delicious juices, a permanent organic cider mill was established in 1936 in the closed down dairy farm near Pevestorf at the foot of the Höhbeck. From the mid-1940s – in the second generation – the company developed a transregional concept under Harm Voelkel. Straight forward, he continued the idea of the original juice production and processed fresh wild fruit into natural, savoury juices. The breakthrough to a modern organic juice pressing facility came in the third generation, under the direction of Stefan Voelkel. Since the early 1980s, he has been at the head of the family business and developed new juices with passion. Together with his team and the fourth-generation who got involved with enthusiasm, today he offers more than 200 different products in Demeter and organic quality.
Also in the future, the traditional Voelkel cider mill continued to operate in the form of a family business. To meet the economic, environmental and social needs and challenges which the future brings, the family established the Voelkel Foundation at the end of 2011. In addition to the Voelkel GmbH company development within the meaning of the bio-dynamic founding idea, the Voelkel Foundation serves the promotion of organic farming both regionally and globally. It creates and preserves jobs and provides the employees with the security of their livelihoods and the cultivation of the awareness of sustainability and life-friendly values. For the cultivation partners in the area of ecological agriculture, Voelkel Foundation means a reliable and fair trade partnership that will allow them to expand and continue their operations within the meaning of nature and environmental protection.
The product line of today's natural juicing facilities ranges from the harvest-fresh direct filling of tasty vegetable varieties to lacto-fermented juices and fine mother juices to delicious NFC juices and refreshing fruit juice variations from carefully selected fruit varieties. In the meantime, the range includes approximately 170 different products. Only because we still practice a craft at Voelkel and do not work in large industrial style, can the high quality requirements and the special formulations be implemented in the diverse range.
