Our history August Töpfer & Co has been owned by the Ernst family since 1918. The managing partner of August Töpfer & Co. GmbH is the company Hamburger Zuckerhandelsgesellschaft mbH. August Töpfer & Co. (GmbH & Co.) KG was founded in 1912 by August Töpfer in Erfurt, Germany, as a wholesaler of imported groceries such as sugar, coffee, pulses and dried fruit. After the death of the founder in 1918 the company was taken over by the Ernst family. Under the leadership of Rudolf Ernst, August Töpfer & Co. extended its market position and defended it successfully, even during periods of inflation and economic crisis. A branch was also established in Hamburg.
After 1945, Rudolf Ernst’s sons Alfred and Klaus took over the leadership of the company and concentrated on continual expansion in the company’s traditional activities. August Töpfer & Co became established as a major player in the international sugar trade in particular. Today August Töpfer & Co is still the largest German exporter of white sugar.
Since 1990 the company has been under the leadership of Rudolf and Robert Ernst who represent the third generation of the Ernst family. The company has grown steadily and is now a supplier of systems for food and non-food applications. It provides a comprehensive service to clients covering import, storage, packaging and logistics.
