It was in 1998 that Carlo and Paola decided to turn their lives upside-down. With three children and dreams galore, they left the frenetic life in Milan and moved to Cerreto. It was there, completely immersed in nature, that they started over from zero. It all started with the restoration of the 18th-century tower using green building principles. Drawing inspiration from the thinking of Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner, they launched organic and biodynamic farming on the surrounding land with the goal of creating a healthy, natural environment.
The result was Il Cerreto, an organic and biodynamic farm which, thanks to the use of renewable energy sources, can generate 60% of the energy it requires.
An oasis of biodiversity which, through biodynamics, offers a 100% organic model of food science in which the pre-eminence of the product revives the flavour of a by-gone era.
Il Cerreto was born from a profound sense of responsibility towards nature and life itself. From the desire to create a farm that would interact in complete harmony with the surrounding environment and respect the natural rhythms governing it. Becoming a living organism which, following the principles of biodynamics, would be born and grow in synergy with the forces of nature, to feed the vitality and fertility of the earth without the use of chemicals.
With this spirit, we have chosen to mould our future, inspired by the teachings of the great philosopher, R. Steiner: “A healthy social life is found only when, in the mirror of each soul, the whole community finds its reflection, and when, in the whole community, the virtue of each one is living.”
Nestled in the Tuscan countryside, the Il Cerreto organic farm is located 7 km from the town of Pomarance and just 20 km as the crow flies from the sea.
Among the hills furrowed by the Cecina River, the area around the town of Pomarance boasts luxuriant woodlands, charming Etruscan ruins and historic sites (Volterra Castle), Rocca Sillana—two extraordinary examples of military architecture—and more. The old medieval towns perched on the rugged, wooded hillsides, grace the area with a rich artistic legacy of mansions, castles, churches and other religious sites, and paintings. Another important feature of the area is the presence of fumaroles and boraciferous soffioni which make Pomarance the world’s geothermal capital.
From the beginning, every step in our activity has been governed by a single goal: to develop a 100% biodynamic farm and offer our customers and guests products of the highest quality that are the fruit of a land that, fortunately, has been little-exploited, and cared for and protected with love and respect for nature.
Alongside this is the desire to create a farm that respects and nurtures spiritual and social values by raising awareness in the area and among local producers of the importance of biodynamics.
