Everybody knows bananas. But what about the blossom and the heart?
The banana blossom grows at the end of the banana tree. It hides the beautiful banana heart between its petals. Because of its beauty, the purple banana blossom stands out on every colourful fruit and vegetable market in Sri Lanka. It is, however, a common meal throughout Asia.
The delicate inner leaves and the middle strand are used. The banana blossom is often used in curries but it also makes a perfect addition to salads and soups. As its taste and consistency is similar to artichoke, it can be used for the perfect vegan (meat) salad.
