Matcha looks back on an old tradition. Already 800 years ago, crushed, green tea leaves were used as secret medicine at the court of the Japanese emperor. Later, Buddhist monks appreciated Matcha for its concentration-enhancing effects during long meditations, and the legendary samurai warriors declared Matcha their favorite beverage. Even today, matcha is an important part of the traditional Japanese tea ceremony.
The fact that Matcha in this country is the latest tea trend, certainly has to do with the fact that Hollywood stars and supermodels lately more and more often are shown with this poison green drink in transparent To Go cups. But the real reason is obvious: Matcha makes the leap between tradition and modern tea culture without losing authenticity. It fits classically prepared into the tealounges in the upscale hotel industry, prepared as a cappuccino at the end of a meal and as a matcha latte to the To Go.
Matcha has a certain health-promoting potential. At least, several studies point this out
As healthy as the tea is, so exclusive is its production. Only a small elite tea growers in Japan can make Matcha tea, because the production is the most elaborate in the world of teas. On shadow plantations, tea bushes grow almost in darkness. The tea plants compensate for the low solar radiation with the production of extra chlorophyll, which gives the matcha its deep green.
At harvest, only the youngest and most delicate leaves are picked, their veins and stems are removed before further processing. After steaming and drying the leaves, they are ground with granite mills to the finest dust.
One gram of powder is needed for the preparation of a classic matcha. The powder is infused with hot water and foamed with the chasen, a special bamboo brush. If you use less water and add frothy milk, you get a matchaccino or a matcha latte.
Matcha Latte To Go is even easier prepared. Mix one tablespoon of Matcha Tea Mix with a little water and add hot frothy milk.
