Food for the Future: Women’s Impact on Sustainable Food Systems

The Congress theme for BIOFACH 2024 focuses on the transformative power of women.

Every year, the event’s international patron IFOAM – Organics International, and national supporting organization, the German Federation of Organic Food Producers (BÖLW) decide on one topic that will be the focus of the congress. This time around, it is the transformative and creative power of women in the food sector and their role in achieving a more sustainable future for our food system.

BIOFACH Forum

Market, opinion, trends and innovations, the BIOFACH forum covers all topics of the global organic market and gathers experts and practitioners to discuss the future of the industry. The organic food industry is recognized as the most sustainable form of food production and serves as a blueprint for solving global challenges such as climate, soil and biodiversity protection and food security. However, war, energy shortages and inflation, as well as catastrophic weather events, pose challenges for more than just industry players. The information and discussions at the BIOFACH forum provide some guidance.

Agriculture Forum

The Agriculture Forum focuses on the interests of farmers. The agricultural and food system can only be transformed if the existence of today's organic farmers is secured and organic represents a perspective for farms to convert to organic. Education, research, promotion, strategies to strengthen the organic farmers, are the topics that will be discussed in the Forum Agriculture.

Sustainability Forum

Those who buy organic buy sustainable - yes, but the dimensions of sustainability are more far-reaching and affect all areas of production and "doing business with each other". The UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the vision of a global sustainability plan. How this plan can be implemented in concrete terms is determined by the agenda of the Sustainability Forum.

Politics Forum

The Politics Forum raises awareness about the laws and action plans that set the framework for shaping or influencing the organic food industry. Industry players, policy and representatives of governmental organizers are invited to discuss their points of view. Because one thing is clear - whether farmer, manufacturer, importer, trader, craftsman or specialized trade, all need stable and reliable framework conditions to be able to face the challenges of the future.

Science Forum

Expert knowledge is more in demand than ever, also because the problems to be solved are becoming increasingly complex. The Forum Science provides a platform for dialog between scientists, practitioners and consultants. Research projects must be adapted to practice, research results communicated and discussed with the industry. What follows from the research results and how can they be implemented? These are all topics that are on the agenda at the Forum Science.

Fachhandel Forum

The programme of the Fachhandel Forum is only in German.

HoReCa Forum

The new HoReCa Forum sheds light on the development of organic foods in out-of-home and community catering. We will discuss topics such as procurement and availability of goods, transformation in kitchens and companies, offers of support from the federal, state and local governments, and the new ordinance on organic catering outside the home.

STADTLANDBIO Forum

The STADTLANDBIO Forum discusses ways in which cities and communities can promote high-quality yet cost-effective organic dining options in community eateries while supporting regional producers.
