How can the organic agriculture and food sector contribute to crisis-proof and sustainable food systems—for example, through climate-resilient farming methods, digital tools for transparent supply chains, or new plant-based protein sources? Under the conference theme “Securing Food Systems – The Organic Way,” BIOFACH, the international patron IFOAM – Organics International, and the national supporting organization BÖLW (German Organic Food Industry Association) are placing this question at the center of the 2027 BIOFACH Congress, which will take place from 16 to 19 February in Nuremberg.
Climate change, declining biodiversity, geopolitical upheavals, and the health consequences of our diets—all of these factors are pushing agriculture and supply chains worldwide to their limits. Simply producing enough food is no longer enough. Food security can only be achieved where environmental responsibility, sustainable diets, and resilient value chains come together.
For this to succeed, we need a strong, interconnected organic sector—from agriculture and processing to retail, foodservice, and consumers.
The 2027 BIOFACH Congress will focus on three key questions:
- What truly secures today’s food supply?
- How can organic farming contribute to healthier food systems?
- How can policymakers and markets accelerate this transition?
A new, curated conference concept provides the ideal setting for this.
New Conference Structure: Tracks Instead of Forums, More Room for Dialogue
The previous forum program has been replaced by five thematic tracks that reflect key future areas of the organic sector. This provides participants with clear professional guidance and allows them to focus more specifically on the following key topics:
- Food Systems Transformation: Transformation of food systems: resilience, food security, innovation, and social change.
- Advancing Organic Agriculture: Further development of organic farming—from soil fertility and biodiversity to climate resilience and innovations in production and value creation.
- Retail & Value Chains: Trade, processing, brands, supply chains, the role of specialty organic retailers, and new business models along the organic value chain.
- Policy & Markets: Political conditions, market trends, regulation, certification, and national and international developments.
- Food, Health & Impact: Nutrition, health, planetary health, plant-based diets, longevity, and scientific findings on the impact of sustainable food systems.
Science is no longer a standalone program area, but rather runs through all tracks as a cross-cutting theme. The SustainableFutureLab, the interactive think tank, is being expanded and will open up even more opportunities for unconventional approaches, bold ideas, and controversial discussions.
With its new concept, the BIOFACH Congress 2027 is positioning itself as the premier gathering place for everyone who wants to actively shape the future of food.
