Which measures are needed to expand the organic sector?
We need more organic – always and everywhere. But we are also already quite big. The organic sector is a thriving, well-established industry. We have achieved excellent growth and market figures. Organic products have found their way into almost every household. You can find them on every shelf in any grocery store. In that respect, I think we can be quite proud of ourselves.
Nevertheless, we still need to see more organic farming on our land; the figures have been stagnating for a few years now. To achieve this, we also need policies to send the right signals: that organic farming remains a key issue for the agricultural sector, the food industry and, above all, for the future.
What role does the younger generation play in the organic sector, and how can we provide them with better support?
The younger generation is incredibly important to the entire organic sector. The organic movement thrives in, for and through young people – whether in agriculture, processing or retail. There are lots of fantastic new ideas and innovative products at BIOFACH. I am really inspired by this spirit – we need it everywhere.
I believe it is important for the older generation to show openness, make room for the younger generation and engage in dialogue: How can we support and empower you? And what do you need from us to help you engage with the world through organic in an even bigger, more vibrant and joyful way?
After all, the younger generation is the future – the future for all of us, but above all also the future for organic farming.
What significance does BIOFACH hold for the BÖLW?
For us at BÖLW, BIOFACH is the place where we show the world just how fantastic organic is. Here, we can demonstrate what an innovative and dynamic sector has developed here, and how much drive, enthusiasm and energy there is in the industry. This makes an impression on people who are not as familiar with the organic sector as we are.
These people also take away the message that the organic sector is an industry that continues to be on the rise and growing – and that is very important. Because this is the moment when we can win politicians over to our cause. This is where we can make it clear to them that we need their political clout and commitment so that the organic sector can continue to grow.
